Visit to Direcção dos Serviços Meteorológicos e Geofísicos (DSMG) Macao (13/12/2025)

On 13 December 2025, 25 members of the Hong Kong Meteorological Society and their family members visited the Direcção dos Serviços Meteorológicos e Geofísicos (DSMG; Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau) in Macao. In the morning, they toured the Centennial Weather Station, the Warning and Forecasting Division, and the TV Studio at the Bureau. This was followed by interactive exchanges and experience sharing with colleagues from DSMG.

Macao still retains the practice of hoisting physical Tropical Cyclone Warning Signals. A lucky member even had the chance to try hoisting a miniature Hurricane Signal No. 10.

DSMG colleagues enthusiastically introduced various instruments at the observation station, including the newly-installed intelligent weather phenomenon observation device.

There were only three forecasters on duty on the day of the visit. However, experts would gather here for frequent weather conferences in response to severe weather events.

Officially launched this year, the TV studio is small yet fully-equipped.

Exchange of souvenirs between Mr. Leong Weng Kun, Director of DSMG and Ms. Lau Sum Yee, Chairperson of the Hong Kong Meteorological Society.

After lunch, the group headed to the Inner Harbour Area for a guided city walk along the former coastline, learning more about the history of Macao, while passing by several Water Level Monitoring Stations.

In addition to data recorded at the Water Level Monitoring Stations, historical water levels caused by storm surges are clearly marked on this yellow wall.

To commemorate the success of the 5 October 1910 revolution in Portugal, “Rua de Sei Mang”, a nostalgic street full of local delicacies, was renamed “Rua de Cinco de Outubro” (October Fifth Street). Once a street populated by opium houses, “Rua da Felicidade” has also now become a tourist destination filled with photogenic spots.

In the afternoon, the delegation visited a water level monitoring station to learn how storm surge warning stickers are used to communicate storm surge information to the public. The delegation thanked DSMG for its warm hospitality.
