Abstract

The use of mercury-in-glass thermometer to measure temperature at the Hong Kong Observatory has a long history.  Recently, the mercury-in-glass thermometers have been replaced by non-mercury liquid filling thermometers following recommendation from the World Meteorological Organization.  Details of the replacement process are described in this paper – including sourcing of suitable non-mercury liquid-in-glass thermometer, conduction of parallel-run study with existing mercury-in-glass thermometer and final selection of the replacement thermometer.
