The weather of January 2026 – A dry and sunny January
With dry northeast monsoon affecting Hong Kong for most of the time in the month, January 2026 was much drier and sunnier than usual. Only about 10 percent of the normal of 33.2 millimetres in the month were recorded. The monthly mean relative humidity of 63 percent was 11 percent below the normal of 74 percent for January. The monthly total sunshine duration amounted to 216.1 hours, about 48 percent above the normal of 145.8 hours.

Extreme heat, cold, precipitation and fires mark the start of 2026
The importance of accurate and timely forecasts and investment in early warning systems has once again been highlighted by extreme weather which wreaked a heavy economic, environmental and human toll throughout the first weeks of 2026. “It is no wonder that extreme weather consistently features as one of the top risks in the The World Economic Forum’s flagship annual Global Risks Report,” said WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo.

World Meteorological Day 2026 – “Observing Today, Protecting Tomorrow” (測今日氣象,護明日家園)
Every 23 March, WMO commemorates the coming into force of the Convention establishing WMO on 23 March 1950. It showcases the essential contribution of NMHSs to the safety and wellbeing of society and is celebrated with activities around the world. The theme for World Meteorological Day 2026 is “Observing Today, Protecting Tomorrow.”

Advances in tropical cyclone monitoring and forecasting in Hong Kong using ensemble predictions and artificial intelligence
Five notable advancements in the HKO by utilizing EPS and AI to support TC monitoring and forecasting include (i) TC strike probability maps generated from multiple EPS, (ii) probabilistic storm surge forecast products to strengthen coastal flood risk assessment, (iii) an AI-based system for real-time position analysis and intensity estimation based on satellite imagery, (iv) a real-time flood monitoring tool leveraging camera imagery and AI algorithms, as well as (v) the use of AI weather prediction models to support TC forecasting operations.
